I left Montgomery in a little bit of a hurry
Made it almost to Mobile, fore I began to worry
They had a fair description, the color of the clothes
Of a man robbing a bank a few hours ago
I hit the first local bar, flashed some green, caught her eye
‘Fore I left, I had a woman and a damn good alibi
Sometimes the pieces fall in place
Puts a big smile on your face
All you needs the perfect lie
And a damn good alibi
She was long and lean and conveniently in need of some cash
I had a proposition and she jumped on it fast
Got a room and pretty soon thought I’d learned all I should know
But she failed to inform me of where she’d left a bullet hole
Then the boys in blue kicked down the door
said, “your husband didn’t die,
But if you’re gonna get out of this, you’ll need a damn good alibi”
Just when the pieces fall in place
Fate wipes that smile off your face
And suddenly the perfect lie
Shoots holes in your damn good alibi
The next thing I remember, she flew down the fire escape
Disappeared with all my money, she made a clean break
Said, “Officer, I just met her – but I’ll tell ya’ all I know
Could we do this tomorrow, right now I’ve gotta go”
He said, “Boy, you best just have a seat, start talking don’t be shy,
And if you’re from Montgomery best have a damn good alibi…”
Just when the pieces fall in place
Your plan backfires in your face
No such thing as a perfect lie
There’s only damn good alibis
